Self-employed individuals

You are self-employed if you carry on business for yourself.  The tax form that is typically required to report most self-employment income and expenses is a "Schedule C."  The Schedule C would be attached to your individual tax return, form 1040, and filed by April 15th each year.  Usually there are many other forms that also become part of your tax return for a self-employed individual such as:

  • Schedule SE - Self-employment tax
  • Form 4562 - Depreciation and amortization
  • Form 8829 - Business use of home
  • Form 1040ES - Estimated tax payments

Some retirement plans available for self-employed individuals: Traditional & Roth IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE 401K, Self-employed 401K.
